Rocker Courtney Love has just lost legal custody over her 17-year-old daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, People magazine informs. Control over the teenager goes to Kurt Cobain’s mother and sister, for reasons that have not been made public to the media, and will probably remain a secret, with Love’s attorney telling the mag the matter is a “private” one.

Love has been having serious financial problems over the past months, and it’s very likely this had something to do with the judge stripping her of legal custody of her child. Just a couple of months ago, the star was quoted in the media as confiding to a friend that she was bankrupt and could no longer afford to feed her daughter because of it. On the other hand, Frances herself once said that she felt closest to her paternal grandmother, so perhaps this is not necessarily a bad thing, they say.

“Courtney Love is losing control. But this time it involves her most precious possession: her daughter. A Los Angeles court has appointed temporary guardians over Frances Bean, 17, although the reasons are not immediately clear. Kurt Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor and his younger sister, Kimberly, now have legal, medical and financial authority over the teenager. A court hearing on the matter has been scheduled for February 10,” People magazine informs.

The publication also spoke with someone with the necessary experience to have an educated opinion on the matter and, according to him, things might not be as bad as they seem at first sight. “This doesn’t necessarily mean that Courtney Love is an unfit mother and has completely lost custody. It’s too early to say. It could be because she’s simply going out of state for a long period of time,” LA probate attorney Jeffrey S. Cohen, not involved in the case, tells People.

As also noted above, Courtney Love’s financial problems seemed to reach a climax in October this year, when she was heard telling a friend she had only $120 in the bank, was about to be evicted and did not have permission to access her daughter’s fund, set up by her late father, rocker Kurt Cobain.
