14 DAY TRIAL // Each year, millions of “Friends” fans from all over the world receive new hope that their favorite characters, Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross, would be reunited either for a one-time episode or a feature film. Each year, they’re disappointed because it doesn’t happen.
“Friends” ended 10 years ago after 10 successful seasons on air. To this day, it is one of the most watched sitcoms ever, so it’s probably no major shock that people are still begging for a reunion of sorts. The problem is that it will never happen.
Courteney Cox, who played Monica on the series, was on David Letterman the other night to promote her new TV show and, predictably, talk of the reunion came up. She would like to do it, that much is for sure, but she knows it’s impossible to bring the cast together again.
And that’s because she’s been trying to do just that for the past decade. “Let me tell you something: there's six friends and I've been trying to put together a cast dinner for 10 years. It doesn't happen! I can get the girls to come, maybe Matthew Perry. Matt LeBlanc canceled last time right at the last minute, Schwimmer lives here [in New York City], so it's just not gonna happen,” she says.
Even assuming all six could get back together, after so much time, it would be impossible to make the story stick without ruining the original series. At this point, Cox seems to be saying, there really is no sense in hoping for the reunion or a movie anymore.
So this means that those millions of fans who still clung to hope have now just one thing to comfort them: reruns.
