The elephant is to be taken to a care center in Bangalore, PETA India says

Back in April, the Bombay High Court ruled that an abused elephant by the name Sunder was to be immediately released from the temple where it was being held captive and sent to a sanctuary.

PETA India is happy to inform that, this past May 29, the Supreme Court of India upheld this decision and said that the pachyderm must be removed from the temple and sent to a care center in Bangalore no later than June 15.

“The Supreme Court also ordered that the Secretary, Revenue and Forests Department, Maharashtra State will be responsible for the implementation of its order and must strictly meet the deadline,” the group writes in a press release on the matter at hand.

Hopefully, come June 15 (with a little luck, maybe even sooner) I will be able to report that Sunder no longer lives at the Jyotiba temple and is instead well looked after by staff at a proper wildlife facility.

For those unfamiliar with the elephant's story, Sunder was gifted to the Jyotiba temple back in 2007. Over the years, the pachyderm was beaten countless times, left without food, and even had spiked chains fitted to its legs.

Together with celebs like Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson, PETA members and supporters cannot wait for Sunder to finally be released and welcomed by a care center whose staff is ready and willing to treat it right.
