Sustainable architecture is one of the hottest green trends spotted in 2011. However, only a few initiatives of this kind can compare to the original train car house designed and built by a German couple.
Recycling goes hand in hand with an ingenious idea inspired by a romantic story. Marco Stepniak and Vanessa Stallbaum, the developers, met on a train and decided their house should always remind them of their first encounter.
They agreed to build a “H”-shaped house, occupying 1660 square feet. The couple has given a new meaning to two old mail cars, imported from Switzerland, worth $29,000 (€22,178).
A high dosage of originality involves a few risks, since it was difficult to find experts able to properly insulate their new home and make it energy-efficient.
At this point, they seem pleased with the result, and say the money and time invested in this project have been wisely spent. Now they can simulate movie-inspired goodbyes from the comfort of their own home.
