The Linux version of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive seems to have been in the works for ages, but now there is finally some news about it, although it's nothing definitive.

Valve has ported most of its games catalog to the Linux platform, with just three exceptions: Alien Swarm, the first Left 4 Dead game in the series, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Alien Swarm is an isometric cooperative action game that very few people even know exists and it's completely free. It's unlikely that it will ever get ported on Linux. Then there is the first Left 4 Dead game and no one seems to be asking for it. The second iteration is much better, so the first release was pushed to the side. It's not impossible that we might see a Linux port, it's just unlikely.

That brings us to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the latest title in the series and one of the most requested Linux ports. Ever since the release of the stable version of Steam on Linux, back in February 2013, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been on the top of the list for many gamers, and the forums are filled with questions about a possible port.

What changed?

Information about a Linux client for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been sparse and that's putting it mildly. There was a single line dropped by the developers, a while back, that basically said that the work on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive would start when Portal 2 is ported to Linux.

That happened more than six months ago, so everyone assumed that the Linux port was not too far away. Now, a new update has been released for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and it might looke like one of many, but the first line is actually of great interest: "Updated a large number of systems necessary for the Linux client."

Some of you might know already know that there is a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Linux server, so the client can only reference the actual game. Unfortunately, this is the extent of the information shared by the devs and there is still no date attached to the project, but you can be sure that the Beta will arrive pretty soon.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a continuation of the original project that encompasses the gameplay of the original Counter-Strike title, but also brings a new engine, new maps, and lots of new features.
