Some users are still struggling to update to Windows 8.1, with more and more errors experienced during the downloading or the installation process.

Now a number of consumers are reporting problems with the Windows 8.1 setup, just after the point when it is supposed to get devices ready for the new operating system.

An error reading “Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017” is displayed all of a sudden, with the installer then restoring the previous version of Windows.

“I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is ‘getting my devices ready’, then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying: Couldn't update to Windows 8.1. Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC. 0xC1900101 - 0x40017,” one user described the problem.

A Microsoft support engineer has explained that the issue is caused by a driver bug check during the second boot and recommended users to check if all updates are installed on the computer.

Unfortunately, the suggestion doesn’t make any difference for most users, so everybody’s still waiting for another workaround.
