14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 10 is definitely going to represent a critical milestone not only for users but also for Microsoft itself, as the software vendor is still trying to convince users to upgrade and benefit from all the new features bundled into its revamped OS.
There's no doubt that one of the toughest challenges that Microsoft will try to deal with will be to move users off Windows 7, which continues to be the company's most successful operating system to date.
More than half of the world's computers are powered by Windows 7, so it's pretty obvious that convincing users to upgrade will really be difficult, no matter the feature lineup that Windows 10 will come with.
And statistics show that, despite the Windows 10 frenzy happening across the world these days, Windows 7 keeps holding steady and its market share is barely affected by all the rumors that are swirling around on the web.
More than 50 percent of users still running it
The adjacent chart shows the evolution of Windows 7 between January 2014 and January 2015, which pretty much confirms that users currently running the world's number one desktop OS on their computers aren't quite interested in the Technical Preview build of Windows 10.
Last month, no less than 54.67 percent of the PCs were powered by Windows 7, up from 54.4 percent the month before, these figures provided by StatCounter indicate.
At the same time, Windows 8.1, now at 14.27 percent, recorded a pretty sudden growth, most likely amid news that upgrades to Windows 10 will be offered free of charge for computers running this OS version.
In the end, it all depends on the final feature lineup that Microsoft makes available in Windows 10, as Windows 7 users have pretty much everything they need, including that often-praised desktop familiarity that makes working on the computer easy as pie.
Windows 7 will reach end of extended support in January 2020, so it'll be very interesting to see how Microsoft tries to kill this operating system before this new important milestone.
