Sony is seeing failing profits in its mobile division

Over the years Sony has been offering products from diverse categories including laptops, smartphones, cameras, gaming consoles, TVs or eReaders.

But not all business is thriving at Sony. As you might as well know, last year Sony pulled out of the eBook reader market in the US, letting Kobo in charge of the well-being of customers who still used its products.

Not long after, the device-maker sold its VAIO laptop business to a Japanese company that, despite everything, continues to make products with a distinct Sony vibe.

Sony wanted to concentrate on smartphones, but its plan didn't yield a lot of positive results

Sony sold its laptop branch because it wanted to focus on its smartphone business, but despite the company’s efforts, the handset division is losing lots and lots of money.

And according to a report coming from Reuters, the company CEO Kazuo Hirai is prepared to take some drastic measures in order to maintain the company afloat. How far is he willing to go, you might ask.

If fortune doesn’t turn around soon, Sony might be looking at a scenario where it will be forced to sell off its smartphone or TV business. This is the worst that could happen, but the company might be able to solve things by virtue of accepting to establish joint ventures with other companies.

Sony hasn't started any procedures and what we just told you are just possibilities, nothing more. As the company’s management admits, “no business is forever.”

Sony and Ericsson were in a joint partnership until not so long ago, when the company bought Ericsson’s stake in order to setup Sony Mobile Communications. It looks like Sony might want to go down this path again, in order to salvage its failing mobile business.

In the meanwhile, Sony is preparing new products including a new flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4 handset. On top of that, we’re going to see a couple of new tablets arrive on the market, one of which boasts a pretty large 12.9-inch form factor.
