The Jolie-Pitts are apparently in for some serious drama, as In Touch prepares to release an article in which they claim that Angelina and Brad may have to return Zahara, the Ethiopian girl Angelina adopted two years ago, to her natural family. This is apparently due to the fact that the young girl's birth family want to bring the two-year-old home to Ethiopia. However, the story appears to be much more complicated than that.
When Angelina adopted Zahara over two years ago, she was malnourished, suffering from rickets and was basically days away from death. On June 20th, 2006, stated on CNN that Zahara "is from Ethiopia. She's an AIDS orphan". However, Zahara's adoption papers were signed by her grandmother at a time when the latter claimed that her daughter (Zahara's mother) was dead. It seems, however, that it's not quite so, and that it's not only Zahara's grandmother and extended family that are alive and well in Africa: Zahara's allegedly dead mother has apparently surfaced - and she wants the little girl back.
Mentewab Dawit Lebiso, who claims to be Zahara's birth mother, has spoken out about the adoption, saying she'd love to be reunited with the child. The 24-year-old says: "I want my daughter to come home to see where she is from. Her grandmother and I both tried very hard to raise her, and I want her to come home to regain her identity". I'm not sure they did a very good job raising her, seeing that the toddler was weak and close to death when Angelina basically saved her life. It is very much possible, I think, that Zahara's grandmother lied to the adoption agency and told them the girl's mother was dead - but now, it seems, her lie may mean a family drama for Angie and Brad.
Angelina, an insider says, has heard the published tales of Zahara's African family, but feels on a deeper level that Zahara is part of her family. "She believes that Zahara is an orphan and the woman who claims to be her mom is mistaken", says a friend. Government papers said Zahara was an AIDS orphan, says the pal, and "Angie had no reason to believe otherwise. Zahara was days away from death and Angelina saved that child. As far as she is concerned, that bonded her to that little girl forever". Well, that makes sense - but I have a feeling there is more to this piece of news than we might initially think. So stay tuned, and we'll bring you the latest news as soon as it's out.
