The security of one's data is an extremely important subject nowadays and since USB flash drives are pretty much the most widespread portable data storage solutions around, the manufacturers of such devices are trying their best in order to implement new and improved security solutions into their products.
However, while most rely on included software applications, the Corsair company has decided to try a different approach and launched the Flash Padlock family of USB drives, which provides a very innovative access system.
Thus, the drives from this series have been fitted with a secure access system based on an user-customizable PIN. In order to actually be able to use the data stored in the device's NAND chip, the users will first have to input the 10-digit security code, which will unlock the drive. Moreover, the access system is quite a simple one, as the direct keypad access and indicator lights make the locking/unlocking procedure quite simple and understandable.
Another important selling point of the Flash Padlock drives is the fact that they sport an "Auto-Locking" feature, which means that the user doesn't need to remember to enable the protective feature, since it will automatically lock and protect itself after removal from the computer. Moreover, the device provides quite a high level of versatility in terms of compatible OSs, as it works with Windows, MAC and Linux platforms without the use of additional software.
"The Corsair Flash Padlock is one of the most secure USB flash drive solutions on the market today," said Jack Peterson, VP of Marketing at Corsair. "Corsair has built the Flash Padlock specifically for those customers with concerns about inadequate software-based security solutions on a USB flash drive. The designed hardware security feature puts these concerns to rest," continued Peterson.
The Flash Padlock family of drives includes 2 models, featuring 1 GB and 2 GB storage capacities, which retail for around 30 and 40 US dollars respectively, which are actually above the normal ranges for such devices, but I guess that the very original security system does justify the price difference.
