Corsair Intros Neutron GTX Series 9 SSDs with 90K Random Performance

By grace of a certain web entity stationed in the country that starts the day earliest, we have learned that Corsair has developed a new pair of solid-state drives.

Corsair is making some very bold claims in regards to its new products, although we suppose the action is in line with its reputation as provider of high-end products.

The product names of the two SSDs are as follows: SSD-N240GB3-BK for the Neutron 240 GB drive, and SSD-N240GBGTX-BK for the Neutron GTX drive of similar capacity.

The former is capable of reading at 555 MB/s and writing at 370 MB/s (sustained data rates). Its random read and write performance is what Corsair made a point of praising though. The former achieves 90,000 IOPS, while the latter can go almost as high, to 85,000 IOPS.

The SSD-N240GBGTX-BK (Neutron GTX) has the same random performance, but a much higher sequential writing speed (511 MB/s instead of 370 MB/s).

Strangely enough, Corsair doesn't say what NAND chips the Neutron is made of, but does specify this detail for the Neutron GTX: 24nm Toggle NAND from Toshiba.

That said, both models are otherwise identical in their feature sets, with E-boost NAND management technology (better durability), Garbage Collection and Wear Leveling (maintains performance over time) and support for the TRIM command under Windows 7 (again, preserves performance over time).

Needless to say, the newcomers operate on the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface standard. The controller isn't the one people may expect, however. Rather than a SandForce chip (long-time enabler of high-speed solid-state drives), Corsair selected the IC LM87800 from Link_A_Media devices.

As we have said, shipments of the Neutron and Neutron GTX solid-state drives will begin on September 8, for 19,800 yen ($252 / 2012 Euro) and 24,800 yen ($316 / 251 Euro).
