Security vendor Websense has extended support of its solutions to Apple’s iOS platform. A cloud-based service, Websense TRITON Mobile Security will tend to iPhones and iPads on wireless networks. The solution is aimed at corporate environments.

Touted as the only solution that combines four key elements for highly effective unified mobile security, Websense TRITON Mobile Security does content-aware data security, web security, malicious app protection, and mobile device management (MDM).

This is actually the third phase in the implementation of Websense in the mobile space. It builds upon previous releases that offer mobile email data loss prevention (DLP) and on-premise Wi-Fi security support.

The TRITON features 10 brand new defense mechanisms against data theft and loss. One of the key tools is optical character recognition (OCR) of text within images.

Commenting on Websense’s new release, Jeff Wilson, principle security analyst for Infonetics, said, “When an employee uses a mobile device, the corporate data that resides on or passes through that device is at great risk of loss.”

“Websense TRITON Mobile Security is the latest example of Websense innovation. It extends the company's expertise in web, email, and data security solutions to handheld devices to protect corporate data,” according to Wilson.

The cloud-based service also uses an on-demand VPN tunnel to analyze inbound and outbound data communications.

Administrators in a work environment can deploy Websense TRITON Mobile Security as easily as installing a profile to iOS devices and choosing the company policy. The integrated MDM features will facilitate control and security, minimizing risks while maintaining compliance.

John McCormack, president, Websense, chimed in to say, “Mobility is an unstoppable force that enables users to sometimes unwittingly distribute confidential information through the power of cloud computing.”

“Websense is focused squarely on securing confidential data as it's accessed by corporate and BYOD mobile devices. With the general availability of Websense TRITON Mobile Security, organizations can now have the mobile security they haven't seen with MDM solutions,” McCormack concluded.
