On Friday, Corning Incorporated officially announced the upcoming availability of a 3D-shaped Gorilla Glass, which should prove a great option for protecting flexible display.

The company is ready to start the manufacturing of the new Corning Gorilla Glass using a new 3D glass-forming technology, and claims that it will be able to have the final product available this year.

Moreover, the Corning has announced that it is working together with G-Tech Optoelectronics Corp. (GTOC) to kick off a vertically integrated operation in Taiwan.

“Product design continues to drive the consumer electronics industry. More than half of the top 10 smartphone manufacturers already market devices that incorporate cover glass with subtle curves, and the demand for even more-dramatic form factors is increasing,” the company announced.

The new 3D-forming technology from the company meets this demand and also provides extended design possibilities for designers, Corning claims.

Moreover, the company notes that the partnership with GTOC will provide it with the possibility to offer a “one-roof” solution.

“We can now take Gorilla Glass all the way from flat sheet to a finished 3D-shaped product in Asia, expediting turnaround times and minimizing logistical complexity,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials.

The move is expected to provide benefits for both Corning and for its customers, James R. Steiner continued.

According to the company, the new 3D-forming technology was designed so as to achieve precise tolerances, as well as high throughput, all on a platform that should prove more economical when compared to alternative two-mold forming methods.

The new technology is based on the use of Gorilla Glass of uniform thickness which allows designers to come up with devices that are both thinner and lighter than before.

Corning also notes that the 3D glass-forming technology to shape Corning Gorilla Glass is aimed at leveraging the emergence of conformable displays that have started to gain popularity on both smartphones and on wearable applications.
