Apparently a lot of people still use their Macs to save data on optical media as Corel Inc., makers of the widely known Roxio software, have released Toast DVD in the Mac App Store with the “special price” of $14.99 / €13.99 until May 31st.

The announcement (and application description) states, “From the makers of the best-selling Roxio Toast, Toast DVD is the easiest and fastest way to create DVDs on your Mac. Toast DVD is the perfect companion for iMovie, making it easy to share your movies with friends and family.”

To be frank, there are a couple of things that Toast DVD apparently does that you cannot get with other free applications, but $14.99 / €13.99 is still a high price to pay for a dying technology: compact discs. Not to mention that the price will actually go higher once the “special” offer expires.

But if there’s one thing you can be sure of is the quality of the product. Corel is an artist at user interfaces, and Toast DVD is no exception to the rule. The app makes it extremely simple for any kind of user to burn discs from the movies they create on their Mac.

You can burn standard and high definition video discs that can be enjoyed on virtually anything that can read DVDs, you can burn Video-TS Folders and compilations with menus, burn HD content on standard DVDs that can be played back on Blu-ray players, and more.

Other features include 25 colorful themes, customizable menu text and backgrounds, automatic chapter markers (or create your own), support for 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, DVD-ROM content, and the option to “Save as Disc Image,” which comes in pretty handy for people burning games.

Corel says it is very important to note that “this version only supports OS X 10.7 and later,” which is sad news for people running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) because they’re the ones who mostly still use optical drives.

10.7 users can be counted on the fingers from one hand, and the rest of the population running OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Mavericks have long foregone discs in favor of flash storage.

But, regardless of which camp you’re in, if burning DVDs is your thing, Corel has you covered with one of the best solutions available on the market. To download Toast DVD for your Mac, you’ll also need around 226MB of free space.
