Corel, one of the leaders of graphics and digital applications, announced yesterday the acquisition of WinZIP Computing, the company behind the well-known tool.

Currently, the WinZip line includes three primary products: WinZip, WinZip Companion for Outlook and WinZip Self Extractor. WinZip Companion for Outlook extends WinZip's functionality to Microsoft's Outlook e-mail application, automating the compression and encryption of e-mail file attachments. WinZip Self Extractor allows users to create archives that can be uncompressed without the need for the WinZip application.

The press release in which the acquisition is announced doesn't specify the way in which the WinZip technologies will be implemented into the Corel products, but it is likely the next versions of the applications will allow automatic compression and encrypting of the created files.

"With a large, loyal user base and a globally established brand, WinZip is an ideal complement to Corel's Productivity and Graphics and Digital Imaging product lines," said David Dobson, CEO of Corel Corporation.
