Windows Phone 7, the latest mobile operating system flavor that Redmond-based software giant Microsoft announced officially in early 2010, is set to receive a major software update in the coming months, if not weeks.

The first update for Windows Phone 7 should bring forth a nice range of enhancements, including the long awaited and much discussed copy and paste functionality.

There are not too many official details available on the update and on the other features that it might bring forth, but you can now have a look at the Windows Phone 7 copy & paste capabilities in the video below.

Although the OS was expected to include this feature right from the start, Microsoft had to postpone its availability for a few months.

With the first devices powered by Windows Phone 7 made available for purchase in late October, users would have to wait only a few months before the feature would be added into the mix.

The first software update for the mobile operating system was rumored to arrive on devices in early 2011, some even suggesting that January might be the actual release window for it.

Microsoft already confirmed the upcoming availability of this software solution, and also the fact that it would bring copy and paste into the mix, but it did not offer a specific release date as of yet.

However, it appears that the release window should be pretty close, especially since the company already started to test the update out in the wild.

Various developer devices already received the software update that makes copy and paste possible on Windows Phone 7, and they report having the 7.07338.0 build installed on their handsets.

The video below, available courtesy of WMPoweruser, shows copy and paste in action on a Samsung Taylor developer device. One should agree that things look promising.

Hopefully, the January release date for this software update would indeed pan out, so keep an eye on this space for more.
