Casual game sales over 1.6 million copies

If people thought that the casual games can't be associated with the concept of "best sellers" or, at least, platinum, this piece of news will probably come as a big surprise. Majesco Entertainment has just announced that the Cooking Mama franchise is a market hit, having sold 1.6 million copies for both Nintendo DS and Wii consoles. And all these numbers are US-based only.

If you are really interested to see how casual games can turn to be so profitable, you should know that 1 million of the copies were sold for the DS console (the original Cooking Mama game) while 600,000 are split between Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the Wii and the DS sequel, Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends. Following this great success, as expected, a Wii version of Cooking Mama 2 will be released in the US this year.

Now, don't get me wrong, I can accept a game where I have to do the same thing since the beginning to the end but... why would you like to play a sequel, though? You will do the same things, right? So there is no satisfaction. Still, this casual game could be aimed to please the modern chicks who have no idea how to cook... or the unlucky lads who had the guts to say, one night, after playing COD 4 for 12 hours straight: "Baby, I'm hungry". The answer to all these: Cooking Mama! And since everything is virtual here and no actual, real, tasty and juicy food is made, people could even appreciate this game's efforts to fight against obesity. Cooking Mama is the future, not Wii Sports!

And since Cooking Mama was such a successful title, here are a few free suggestions for Majesco Entertainment: Ironing Grandma, Beer-drinking Daddy, Bone-digger Doggy and, for the pornstar in you, The Silicone Doc. Enjoy.
