Future might hold something

We already know that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is coming on July 27 to real time strategy enthusiasts all over the world. But one potential drawback for the new title from Blizzard could be that the game only arrives on the PC, the developer not even hinting that it might be interested in porting its franchise to the Xbox 360 or to the PlayStation 3. But even though the StarCraft II experience is specifically designed for the PC, there's a bit of hope the series might hop to home consoles at some point.

Chris Sigaty, the lead designer working on StarCraft II, told CVG that, at the moment, “Console is not on the radar for us right now, but there have been a lot of interesting moves in that direction - taking RTS to consoles - and there's been some pretty cool things on the control side,” adding, “I still think that at least from our perspective it feels like the mouse and keyboard just lends itself to this style - but you know we're getting closer and closer all the time. So when we see that optimum moment I think it's certainly possible that we'll explore that junction as well. It's just not on the radar right now.”

At the Game Developers Conference, Sony showed off its upcoming motion tracking PlayStation Move system by using it to control a game from StarCraft, in an effort to show how the technology would open up the PlayStation 3 for more game genres.

The complexity of real time strategy videogames is often linked to the controls that require a keyboard and a mouse, and attempts to translate the scheme to the console controller have largely failed until now.

If there's any Blizzard made title that might be ready to move to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, it's Diablo III, a game we will find out more about after StarCraft II actually ships.
