Yesterday we talked about Connecting to Xbox LIVE via Wireless Connection, which is pretty complicated if you don't have the necessary experience. However, even with a direct Internet connection, some Xbox 360 owners will find themselves unable to connect to LIVE. That's why we've made available the guide below (courtesy of iamlucky18 up on xbox360forum.com), so everyone can do it by the book.

DEF ADSL modem - ADSL modem or DSL modem is a device used to connect a single computer or router to a DSL phone line, in order to use an ADSL service. The acronym NTBBA (network termination broad band adapter, network termination broad band access) is also common in various countries. Some ADSL modems also manage the connection and sharing of the ADSL service with a group of machines.

Asymmetric digital subscriber line transceiver or ATU-R, as the telephone companies call it, is a functional block inside every ADSL
modem which actually performs modulation, demodulation and framing, while other functional blocks perform Asynchronous Transfer Mode Segmentation and Reassembly, IEEE 802.1D bridging and/or IP routing. Typical user interfaces are Ethernet and USB. Although an ADSL modem working as a bridge doesn't need an IP address, it may have one assigned for management purposes.

Connecting to Xbox LIVE - Direct Connection:

Remember that an ADSL router is an ADSL modem and router combined.

Requirements: Ethernet patch cable, a PC with either a USB or ethernet connection to the router, existing broadband enabled phone line with socket, ADSL router software (optional), ADSL router

Follow the steps below to setup your network:

1. Install your ADSL router software if it is not already installed.

2. Make sure your computer, router and XBox 360 is switched off.

3. Connect the ADSL router to the USB or ethernet port of the computer.

4. Now connect the XBox 360 console to the ethernet port of the ADSL modem (see picture below)

5. Now switch on the ADSL router and PC only.

6. Once the PC is running, switch on the XBox 360.

7. Go to the XBox Dashboard and select the option to Sign onto Live.

The setup of your network using this method should be similar to that illustrated by the picture to the top left side of the article. Good luck!

Hi.

I've just moved to university and I've got to take it in turns to plug the ethernet cable from my PC and 360 into the wall as I don't have a router. The PC was no trouble to set up but the 360 won't recognise the network, can you suggest anything?

@ Pleb
Have you tried configuring the ethernet cable to your Network settings? If yes run your Test Xbox Live Connection in the My Xbox>System Settings>Network Settings. Enter the error you receive so I can help you more.
