Tests carried out using a "final release" version of iOS 4.1 have revealed considerable improvement in the behavior of the software on iPhone 3G handsets, according to a technology web site. Known to slow down old-generation hardware, iOS 4.0 was released this summer packing over 100 new features, including multitasking, application folders, an improved Mail with a unified inbox, Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform, iBooks and others.
Virtually an entire iPhone 3G community reported major issues with iOS 4.0, following the public release of the software.
Apple later acknowledged these issues and promised a firmware fix.
According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs speaking at the company’s Septmeber 1 event in San Francisco, that fix is scheduled to ship on September 8, inside iOS 4.1.
Apple also posted a message on its UK web site signaling that iOS 4.1 is to arrive on September 8.
Surprisingly, the company's US store still lists availability as "coming soon" (at the time of this writing)
Lifehacker now claims Apple has finally nailed pretty much every bug that slowed down iPhone 3G handsets.
The site posted a video comparing the behavior of one iPhone 3G unit running iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.1 subsequently.
According to the testers, the most noticeable difference was "UI responsiveness." The video, embedded below, stands as testimony.
The iOS 4.1 Software Update is the first major update to iOS 4. It brings Game Center, new iTunes features, high dynamic range photography, HD video uploads, and more to iPhone and iPod touch.
iOS 4.1 will be applicable on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, the second-, third-, and the fourth-generation iPod touch.
For iPad customers, Apple has prepared iOS 4.2, which the company previews in a special page on its web site.
With iOS 4.2, Apple plans to bring some of the features originally introduced in iOS 4.0 over to the iPad.
These include application folders, multitasking, and others. Apple previously noted that iOS 4 was due for iPad in Fall 2010.
“Look for iOS 4.2 coming in November for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch,” Apple now states.
Notably, the software also brings Airplay, a new feature recently announced by Apple that allows users to wirelessly stream videos, music, and photos from an iPad to the new Apple TV.
The function also allows streaming music to AirPlay-supported speakers or receivers, including AirPort Express, Apple said.
This YouTube video was extremely aggravating! The man operating the phones makes me angry! Next video use someone who has used and iPhone before!

The proof is always in your personal experience. You Tube Videos can always be adjusted to show what someone wants you to see. I am in sales and know how to show a product to it's finest. Same thing with benchmarks, choose the product, data and user to make what you are selling shine.

It doesn't really matter.
The title of this video is iPhone 3G but it's actually a 3GS in the video (it says so in the title screen and it has a compass).
The video is blasted all over these sites comparing the 3G on iOS 4.1 vs. 4.0 but it's completely misleading cause its a 3GS!!!!!!
I'm using ios 4.1 final release on my iphone 3g now having gone from 3.0.2. I have no experience of 4.0 however i can tell you that 4.1 appears to run very quickly on the iphone 3g. UI performance may even be better than 3.0.2.

If I can ever my my 3G out of update mode perhaps I will be able to test 4.1. Until then I have no phone. I use it extensively in business; er, well I did. My livelihood can not afford Apple and their BS.

Thanks, David C.
We need more performance comparisons between iOS 3 and iOS4.1 on a iPhone 3G.
We all know that iOS 4.0 is slow on a 3G compare to iOS 3, but how does iOS4.1 compare with iOS 3?
Once I get a better idea, I'll be ablt to decide if I will upgrade to iOS 4.1, or downgrade back to iOS 3.
The initial up date to 4.01 made my brand new 3G almost totally useless. I just updated to 4.1 and it SEEMS to be working better. Still testing to see if it works ok, but for now, the sluggishness seems to be gone... for now..
My 3g is still almost unusable even with the ios 4.1 upgrade. This may be related to the fact that I use google calendars and contacts and sync that route rather than mobileme. Not sure. As much as I am tempted to buy iphone 4 to resolve the problem, I'm not happy that the change is forced and am considering the better cell performance of verizon and a droid 2.
i have a very slow performance with OS4.0.1 its a very bad experience. now im going to update, but i dont belive it will be working fine. i will post later after instal. how ever dont install os4.0.1, i was stupid, i didnt read it before. hawk

Just upgraded iphone 3G to OS 4.1. SMS messages and calendars (and other stuf) still too slow. Calendar takes ages to load from google calendar.
Its really not good enough and for those with 3Gs that are now close to useless it leaves a feeling of being robbed. Shoddy work Apple. Shoddy treatment of your customers. I expect better.

Back in July I upgraded me iphone 3G from 3.12 to 4.0. The performance was a nightmare! I ended up jailbreaking the phone for better performance. Well, long story short, I installed way too applcs and made too many tweeks to the phone it was all messed up. So I 're-virginized' my phone to factory setting and upgraded ios 4.1. To my surprise the performance is VERY acceptable!! I said that b/c my 3G is still slower than my friend's 3GS but at least my applcs and games are working again (it's been 4 days... no crashes yet). Don't think I have to go back to the 'jailbreak' route again.
