A Chinese website yesterday rolled out a rumor that shocked plenty of Microsoft fans: the Redmond-based software giant was apparently planning to cancel the Windows 8 retail DVD box and distribute the new operating system exclusively via the Internet.

A Microsoft spokesperson, however, denied the rumor for neowin.net, confirming that Windows 8 would continue to be sold on a traditional DVD disk in all Microsoft stores and its partners.

A blog post published by Microsoft in July revealed that “a packaged DVD version of the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro will be available for $69.99” as part of a campaign that runs through January 31st, 2013.

As you probably know by now, Microsoft will launch the new Windows 8 on October 26th and buyers of previous Windows versions can also move to the last version of the operating system via an online upgrading service.
