Box Clever’s concept is one of the most appealing you have ever seen

Smartwatches have been at the center of attention, as of late. First, it was Samsung introducing its latest Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo and then Google announced its own dedicated wearable OS, dubbed Android Wear.

But if you’re not convinced so far smartwatch-wise, maybe you should take a look at this design coming from the Box Clever studio. They have come up with a smartwatch concept called Span, which looks pretty dandy.

This smartwatch might ring the bell of those who are eagerly awaiting for Motorola to launch its first wearable, the Moto 360.

But maybe you’ll like the Span a little bit more. The device combined the feats of an analog timepiece with an OLED screen that relays notifications and such.

The Span looks pretty atypical by virtue of the black mesh band that splits the screen in two. On top of that, the watch has a jump hour mechanism, with the hour at the top and minutes on the bottom. And when the hands reach the end of their journey they jump back to the beginning.

You might be wondering what the black mesh is all about. Well, that’s where the OLED screen is, in charge of displaying reminders, alerts, call details and so on.

Like many smartwatches today, the Spin is said to have been designed to work in concert with a smartphone and not replace it, so you won’t see any additions on its surface, like a microphone.

Box Clever says the body of the watch should be made of polished steel and glossy black ceramic, while the bezel should have something more matte.

We know what you’re thinking at this point, it sounds like we’re talking about a luxury watch. In the pictures the Span looks really great, but maybe the middle black mesh might be considered unharmonious at first by some users.

We've been stating for a number of times, that for smartwatches to be able to capture the imagination of consumers and go main-stream, they will have to look gorgeous. Users shouldn't be ashamed to wear the device at a fancy dinner or wedding, so in this respect Span scores major points, because it could actually be mistaken for jewelry.

The Spin is a great concept, beautifully combining an analog timepiece with a high-tech smartwatch, but sadly, before getting super excited about it, we should remind you the device is a concept, so it might never actually make it on the market.
