Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, and Convirture, a company specializing in software for managing virtual machines and cloud environments, have announced that ConVirt 2.0 Open is now available in the Ubuntu Partner Repository. This provides an easy way for users and companies looking to manage several virtual instances to deploy ConVirt 2.0.

"Canonical’s commitment to helping enterprises implement and build up their virtual infrastructure will be greatly enhanced by the ability to offer ConVirt 2.0 as a management layer," Matt Asay, COO of Canonical, said.

"We think users will see an immediate benefit whether they are using the Xen, KVM or both hypervisors on Ubuntu," he added.

The open source edition of ConVirt 2.0 is now available to Ubuntu users which can install the manager just like any other package in Ubuntu as long as the Partner Repository is enabled.

This enables users to manage Xen and KVM-based virtual environments. It is also a great tool for those operating a private cloud environment.

"Since we first offered ConVirt 1.0, we have always believed that users of Xen and KVM deserve to have advanced management capabilities on par with some of the closed, proprietary offerings on the market," Arsalan Farooq, CEO of Convirture, said.

"Given Canonical’s focus on the cloud, and our ability to manage it, we think this is a great start to a partnership that will delight customers and deliver real value," he added.

There is also a ConVirt Enterprise version which adds several tools and features, predictably, aimed at businesses and enterprises.

Canonical has been increasingly focused on cloud environments and already offers a cloud edition of its Ubuntu operating system. It also offers tools for deploying and managing cloud services from Eucalyptus which is an implementation of the Amazon EC2 APIs.
