Computers Win, Humans Lose

This isn't an article about how you lose in some computer games, or about how the machine may do some stuff better than you can. It's about the fact that no matter what ISPs do, botnets still have one up on them. And you
know why? It's because not only is there is no perfect way of battling these cyber-monsters, but no Internet Service Provider would go to one's home, slap him twice, give him a security lesson and clean his PC of any bots.

Someone once said that artificial intelligence is no match for human stupidity, and he was right. The ISPs can deploy whatever security modules they like and go out of their way to throw the best cyber-measures to enact on security, but it's a human that will click on a link and get a bot on the computer.

If you've read the news, then you know of the recent Arbor study that says ISPs fear botnets more than they fear DDoS. Thing is, they're trying to fight them, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes they give the botnet more bandwidth, but this will not work when the traffic hits gigabits of speed.

The good news is that ISPs are fighting against these botnets and trying to find a solution to take them down. Apparently, if a "one size fits all" thing were to come along, it would be great, because then they would have a unique measure to fight all botnets, fact which would be more efficient and less expensive.

In any case, 2007 is the first year the cyber-world has experienced real botnet problems, so the fact that people are waging war against these is a great thing; and the fact that they have yet no perfect solution to the problem is only natural. It's not easy to find a botnet fighting model, not with the web today…
