Chicago leading the way in security

This is really good news, and I'm happy to write about this, since security-related good news has been so rare as of late. You've noticed the fact that evil hackers could use computers to cause a lot of damage, but hey, security experts aren't just sitting around either. They've started using powerful computers and advanced technologies to give a new meaning to security, thus making it more efficient. It might sound like the stuff of the future, but it's happening here and now.

Americans are striving really hard to deploy the best security measures and now they've got the IT giants working on the matter. IBM got involved with Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications. In case you didn't know, the city of Chicago is filled up with video-surveillance cameras (they're by the thousands) and they're linked by optic cables, all this to keep a better track of emergencies at all time. Further more, this is a great security measure, since there is no need to have a patrol at a certain location to know that something bad is happening - the camera will film it all.

So, now, they've decided to go and improve this system even more - As NetworkWorld announces, IBM's software will analyze the thousands of hours of video recorded by Operation Virtual Shield (as this has been called). As seen on the same site, this software is going to be a major improvement, since it can recognize suspicious behavior - like a package that had been left in a public park or a car parked in a place where it isn't supposed to be.

In my opinion, this is going to give some false positives, but, still, it's one hell of a great improvement! This, in combination with the latest news, just proves that computers are a two-edged blade - they can be used to do both good and bad.
