The computers will become more intelligent than the human beings within the next 20 years, if the computer industry keeps up with the actual progress. Scientific futurologists claim that the next 50 years will bring 32 times more technical progress than the entire 20th
century.

One of the most important achievements of the next 20 years will be artificial intelligence that will reach the human capacities. American computer guru Ray Kurzweil claims that the machines will rapidly become more intelligent than humans. The apocalyptic scenarios are out of discussion, and Dr. Kurzweil claims that their intelligence will be put to work in order to solve some of the most challenging problems of the 21st century.

Kurzweil is one of the computing pioneers that could be called a technology prophet. He is deeply related to multiple fields of computing, such as optical character recognition, optical storage and automatic speech recognition. The future he described is made of machines that are able to learn how to communicate, teach and replicate among themselves.

"The paradigm shift rate is now doubling every decade, so the next half century will see 32 times more technical progress than the last half century. Computation, communication, biological technologies - for example, DNA sequencing - brain scanning, knowledge of the human brain, and human knowledge in general are all accelerating at an ever-faster pace, generally doubling price-performance, capacity and bandwidth every year," Kurzweil claimed.

While modern computing is based on two-dimensional chips built out of silicon. However, researcher are looking for viable alternatives that would allow them to achieve chips using biological molecules, as they are able to get miniaturized way beyond the metal-based processors.

"Three-dimensional, molecular computing will provide the hardware for human-level 'strong artificial intelligence' by the 2020s. The more important software insights will be gained in part from the reverse engineering of the human brain, a process well under way. Already, two dozen regions of the human brain have been modelled and simulated," he said.
It is true that the human brain cannot be compared to a, say, storage server, because it can not match the machine in memory speed and capacity, but it has the unique abilities of associating and interconnected pieces of information, to perform estimations and plan.

"Once non-biological intelligence matches the range and subtlety of human intelligence, it will necessarily soar past it because of the continuing acceleration of information-based technologies, as well as the ability of machines to instantly share their knowledge," Dr Kurzweil said.

"if the computer industry keeps up with the actual progress."

Umm, what?

I dont think that computers could out reach our human brain capabilites, because as scientists claim we are only using a certain percentage of our brain. Which is less than 10%. Not only that our DNA is also not fully activated. So this means, that we are still like newborns trying to learn how to talk. Im sure in the following years we will be able to evolve intelectually. With that even the technology will advance. The actual process of machines happens due to our own evolvement. A computer is a machine without a brain. It cannot feel or reason. I don't think a mere machine will be able to beat us. I mean if that would be possible what is our purpose of life if some electric machines can outsmart us? We can't be that useless.

well, as we are a living organism, we are made for the simple things. Eating, sleeping, reproduce and adapting to the enviroment. These computers are not made like us. Some are made for pure pleasure, such as entertainment such as light show machines, smoke machines, video games. A few for reading, such as the Amazon kindle, which is taking physical books and making them into a stored text document. While We can remember things, our memories are strange as i see. We can sometimes vividly remember events, have spontaneous memories appear, where as computer's memory is all stored as is and forever on the hard drive. But what We have that computers do not, is a physical body that can repair and evolve itself. I say that as in we can injure our arms, legs. Within a few weeks we can have those function again. Weight training will increase our muscles and endurance. Where computers, they cant train for a marathon. they have a so called MAX. A forklift does not get stronger, only with replacing the parts.

So as far as i see as computers beating us. They may beat us for a stretch of things. But time will bring out who can adapt to the situation. Oh a note i forgot to mention as well. For the human body to repair itself, food and water, both are in high amounts in areas around us. as where computers will need additional resources, such as chips, which i dont know what their made of, but i know the earth is not making new resources for those this century. Computers are limited where living tissue adapts with what is available.

maybe i am wrong but dont humans need to program computers so on a scale of 10 if we aren't smarter than 5 on the scale say then how will we be able to program the computers over 5 ??

i think the idea behind he theory is that the compuer will eventually develope "a mind of its own" evolve at a scale far quicker than the human brain can

I dont think computers are smarter than the human intelligence because computers were made and programmed using the intelligence of human.

By the year 2015 computers will likely be smart enough to do things freely on its own. They will have employment application that could do the every day work that we are a custom to.In 2008 they were doing better things, then they stopped showing the public and not herd for a wile. so,I magain we will here are robot friends come back in 2012 with more computing power and flexibility to do more things. Artificial intelligence could be a little bit to much for us in the not to distance future. For are jobs,i would worry!
