The illusion of authority, the fear of being persecuted for a fault real or imaginary can turn regular people into monsters. This is the premise of the upcoming indie “Compliance.”

The movie will be out in the US in August, and until then, a trailer has been released.

The film in inspired by real events: a string of cases which had one mysterious caller pretending to be a police officer call the manager of a restaurant and accuse one of the employees of stealing money from a customer.

The manager would then be asked to do all kinds of demeaning and offensive things to the employee accused. Here is a report of one such incident (age verification required).

As you can see, the film follows the same “recipe.” “Compliance” is directed by Craig Zobel and will be out on August 17.
