Hendrickson Software has released the first version of an automated email backup and viewing tool. Compass 1.0 allows Mac users to selectively archive important emails to the Compass data store, while future versions are said to support Office documents, PDF files, and more.

Hendrickson Software claims that Compass works with virtually every email client, such as Apple Mail, Outlook and all the others. The software integrates with another Hendrickson Mac app called Purify in order to offer selective, automated email archiving.

Basically, Compass is an automated data store and information manager that allows the user to back up important emails, documents, pictures, and so on. It can be used as a stand-alone piece of software on OS X with included AppleScripts, or you can integrate it with Purify (v2.0.8 or better, the developer notes) for cross platform use. A single user license for each piece of software costs 29.95 $ to buy, but you can try them out for free HERE (Compass) and HERE (Purify).

However, powerful selective email archiving and viewing are just some of Compass' features. For $30, aside email archiving with Purify or AppleScripts, users get to define Compass message stores for email messages grouping, select emails to a Compass message store by email message from address, select emails to a Compass message store by user defined phrases in email, email messages viewing with HTML, and picture attachment preview etc.

You can also backup your emails and then restore the database using very simple commands, the developer assures. It "fully" integrates with the company's hsc email filtering product, Purify, meaning no headaches.

Lucky Windows users are also eligible to use this software, as well as Linux users, while Mac owners should be glad to hear that Compass is a Universal Binary, meaning it works just as good with either a PowerPC or an Intel-based machine. The Macintosh version has a plus: it is "fully AppleScript-able."
