A study reveled today by E.ON reflects the fact that most of the small business developed in UK lose up to 7.7 bn every year because they fail to monitor their energy consumption.

According to the information provided by the company, it seems that only a fifth out of the 1,167 companies that operate on the market are fully aware of how much can negligence cost them when it comes to the value of the electricity bill.

Some of the owners tend to disregard the importance of supervising the amount of energy they use, others just don't seem interested to invest in order to improve or replace the equipment available in their workplaces.

Maybe things would be different if they were aware of the fact that their concern towards the environment can translate into savings up to £2,000 every year.

It seems that 9 out of 10 business owners didn't equip their offices with motion sensor or lighting timers, while 8 out of 10 had no way of telling how much energy does their business rely on.

Further more, 13% of the people questioned have no idea what-so-ever about improving their energy consumption, since they frequently open windows while the air conditioning is running.

This lack of responsibility towards the costs implied by their business generates an even bigger lack of concern when it comes to complying with eco-friendly values.

Surprisingly, it seems that this sort of negligence coming from the owner has a negative impact upon the employee's wellbeing.
According to the study, 90% of the subjects called this type of attitude “irresponsible”, while 84% said that this situation has a significant impact on their work.

"With energy saving playing a key role in employees' happiness in the workplace, taking a more efficient approach makes sense. It's a win, win, win situation - saving your business money, helping protect the environment and improving the happiness of employees,” declared Iain Walker, E.ON representative.

A few weeks before E.ON, Rexel conducted a study to find out if business owners are aware of the advantages they might experience once they decide to transform their company into a greener facility.

The result was similar. Lack of information and of interest go hand in hand and cost the enterprises' owners more than they would have to pay to implement the energy consumption monitors, since both earth-friendly service companies and the government offer them great opportunities to lower costs while going green.
