The cult hit series “Community” won't be reaching its goal of “six seasons and a movie” anytime soon because NBC has decided to pull the plug after the end of its fifth season, leaving fans wondering as to why their favorite show won't be coming back.

The Dan Harmon-created series about a group of students at a community college in Greendale, Colorado has been axed after just wrapping up its fifth season. The final episode in the series ran last month and managed to draw in 2.9 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

As fans took to social media to complain about the cancellation, some of the stars of the series also expressed their sorrow online. Joel McHale, for example, tweeted “#darkesttimeline” in reference to the show coming off the air, Gillian Jacobs wrote “Thank you for the love, best fans in the world,” and Dan Harmon concluded with “witter isn't big enough to hold my condolences and more importantly my gratitude to the best fans, cast and crew in TV history. Excelsior.”

“Community” wasn't the only show that got the axe from NBC. The TV network also pulled the plug on “Revolution,” “Growing Up Fisher,” “Believe,” and “Crisis,” in an effort to clean up its slate. However, TV Guide speculates that there is a real possibility for Hulu or Netflix to pick up the cult series.
