BioWare has confirmed recently that it's working on a new Mass Effect game and now the studio has made it clear that it won't be bringing back the protagonist of the first trilogy, Commander Shepard.

The Mass Effect series is arguably one of the most successful franchises made by BioWare and commands not just a loyal following but also a thriving community that wasn't afraid to criticize the studio for the ending of the third game.

Now, after confirming that it's working on a new Mass Effect experience, BioWare has revealed that, while it's still undecided on where to go with the new title, it most certainly won't feature Commander Shepard.

"There is one thing we are absolutely sure of - there will be no more Shepard, and the trilogy is over," BioWare Montreal Art and Design Producer Fabrice Condominas told VG247.

According to the executive, the teams are still gathering feedback from its staff and from the community before deciding what to do with the new game.

"This is really our starting point. Now the Mass Effect universe is vast, and very, very rich. So at this point in time, we don't even know what kind of time frame we're going to be in. All we're doing is more gathering ideas from the teams, gathering feedback to see several things."

BioWare also doesn't want to put players in the shoes of another soldier that's essentially Commander Shepard but without his name, as the studio believes Mass Effect 4 needs to deliver a different type of experience.

"So first, we don't want to make 'Shepard 2′, or Mass Effect 4 with like, 'oh there's no more Shepard but you're a soldier in the universe'. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest."

Considering Mass Effect 4 is still in pre-production, it's going to be a long time before we get to go on another adventure in BioWare's sci-fi universe.
