A bit like Colonization

Paradox Interactive, as the publisher, and Nitro Games, as the developer, have offered more information related to their newly announced title, Commander: Conquest of the Americas. The game is set to be built around trading and strategy mechanics, and will be released in the third quarter of 2010 if everything goes according to plan.

Players will be able to take control of six European powers, which had the logistical capabilities to colonize the Americas and will handle everything related to colonial affairs, from resource collection to productions, from military to foreign policy. The game world offered by Commander: Conquest of the Americas will range from the Caribbean islands, right in resources and warm, to the cold expanse of the Hudson Bay in the North.

The native tribes encountered are crucial to success, allowing early trade opportunities, offering potential labor and being very suited to harass other colonial rivals. Nitro Games also promises naval battles, which will include as many as 30 ships at once with two control modes, designed to accommodate a variety of play styles.

Kim Soares, who is the lead designer working on Commander: Conquest of the Americas at Nitro Games, stated at the Paradox Interactive convention that “The goal of Commander is to create as powerful a presence as you can in the New World before the American revolution starts.”

Nitro Games and Paradox Interactive have already collaborated on East India Company and its Privateer expansion, which combined trading and naval combat and focused on the Indian theater. Reviewers liked the overall concept of the game but criticized the lack of polish and the naval combat. Commander: Conquest of the Americas seems to be taking the same concept and delivering a wider play area and more depth.

Kim Soares is offering more information related to the game in an interview that can be watched below:
