Command & Conquer enthusiasts can rejoice, as the long-standing series' community put together a server in order to keep multiplayer support for a bunch of games following the shutdown of GameSpy.

GameSpy Technology shut down its servers at the end of May this year, making a ton of players presumably enact the scene from The Matrix where Cypher pulls the plugs of his crewmen one by one.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost, and a lot of intrepid gamers found solutions that enabled them to continue playing their favorite games, and such is also the case with a handful of games in the Command & Conquer series.

After Electronic Arts pulled the plug on the free-to-play reboot of the series, after the game's closed alpha test didn't fly so well with strategy fans, the future looked grim for fans of real-time strategy. Things have been pretty quiet since then, although the internet is pining for a modern installment in the classic strategy series.

Fortunately, some C&C aficionados banded together in an effort to save what little remains of the game's legacy, launching a server meant to keep multiplayer an option for Generals, Zero Hour, C&C 3, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3.

C&C Online is a community-made and managed service, available by registering with Revora and installing a launcher, and is a free GameSpy emulating server that works with the C&C games affected by GameSpy's closure, designed to be a direct continuation of the service previously offered.

The best thing about it (apart from the fact that it's free, of course) is that it fully supports mods, so whatever your flavor of classic Command & Conquer action is, you'll be able to indulge in it.

The server stays afloat via donations, which are both "always welcome and needed." The donations received from the community are put to use toward server maintenance and improvements to the overall infrastructure.

You can find a guide on how to connect to C&C Online on the server website, as well as follow the steps in the video below. C&C Online supports hosting, joining and playing games, and also allows players to chat and add their online buddies.

If you're wondering who Revora is, it's a network and community for creative projects that focuses on the development and modding of video games, providing free hosting and community forums to such projects, so their creators are able to showcase their work.
