We’re only days away from the premiere date of “Sharknado 2: The Second One” on SyFy (mark your calendars for July 30), and with Comic-Con 2014 in full swing in San Diego, a panel was put together to promote it.

HitFix reports that SyFy “pulled all the stops” to make the panel a memorable one, bringing on stage director Anthony C. Ferante and stars Ian Ziering, Judah Freelander, and Vivica A. Fox, who took questions from the audience and even introduced a brand new trailer.

The other big “star” of the franchise, former “American Pie” hottie Tara Reid, was not in attendance but she still manages to make headlines – but more on that later.

The first “Sharknado” film aired last summer and told the story of a terrible tornado that sucked all the sharks out of the waters and brought them to land, alive and looking to cause mayhem among humans.

The first trailer for it barely managed to make an impression, though it was duly mocked online. However, as word spread of the absurdity of the plot, the topic gained unexpected attention, so when the film finally aired, it became an instant hit. It might sound hard to believe, but this is the power of the Internet.

Naturally, SyFy ordered a second film, which will up the ante on the ridiculousness but also bring more stars on board.

HitFix says that a new trailer was also shown at Comic-Con, offering glimpses at the many celebrity cameos included (Matt Lauer, Andy Dick, Kelly Osbourne, Kelly Ripa, and Al Roker), but fans should expect many “surprise” appearances as well.

And this brings us to Tara Reid. She wasn’t in San Diego for the big convention, but she did her part to promote the film by doing an interview with the latest issue of GQ Magazine. We don’t know yet if she’s being intentionally funny or if she really believes the stuff that’s coming out her mouth.

Apparently, while we all found the idea of a tornado with live killer sharks a good laugh, it’s not really that.

“You know, it actually can happen,” Tara tells the mag. “I mean, the chances of it happening are very rare, but it can happen actually. Which is crazy. Not that it – the chances of it are, like, you know, it’s like probably ‘pigs could fly.’ Like, I don’t think pigs could fly, but actually sharks could be stuck in tornados. There could be a sharknado.”

As she puts it, we’re to believe that sharks couldn’t just get stuck in tornados but somehow manage to survive them, and when dropped on land, would still have the strength to attack and kill people. Basically, “Sharknado” is a documentary-type of film, showing a reality that could happen.

If she stopped defending the movie and just own its silliness (like the rest of the world has embraced it), she’d make a much better impression.
