Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey surprise fans by showing up at Comic-Con 2014

The biggest surprise on the first day after the opening of San Diego Comic-Con 2014 was, without a doubt, the unexpected appearance of writer / director Christopher Nolan and Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey on the Warner Bros. panel, to discuss “Interstellar,” which comes out in November 2014.

Even though Nolan has previously done the “Dark Knight” trilogy with Christian Bale as Batman, this was his first time at the convention. The same goes for McConaughey, who was actually the first to walk on stage and receive a standing ovation, Collider informs.

He introduced Nolan after he took questions from the audience, and the director too received the warmest welcome possible. “I came to see what all the fuss was about, and judging by the crowd, I’m not disappointed,” Nolan said.

Both discussed “Interstellar” but in such a manner as to not reveal too many details, details that might make fans not want to see the movie when it opens in theaters. McConaughey practically rehashed some of his older comments on the topic but one thing came across perfectly clear: Nolan is one of his favorite directors to work with.

“He’s always out for original. Everything he has to do, it has to be original,” he said. “[‘Interstellar’ is] by far the most ambitious film Mr. Nolan has ever directed.”

He also revealed that Nolan worked based on his gut mostly and that he never did more than 3 takes for one scene, which radically sped up the production process. Then he welcomed Nolan on stage.

The usually media shy director said that one of the many challenges for the movie was in recreating the reality of the space mission on which Cooper (McConaughey) goes in the hope of finding a planet that could substitute Earth and thus save the human race.

“I’m not going to tell you what [the technical challenges] are because I want you to come see the movie,” he said. He also explained that he wasn’t directly interested in psychology, to explore it in his movies, but rather in subjectivity and objectivity in his characters, “how we’re each imprisoned in our own subjective reality.”

The famous director also spoke a bit about the influences for “Interstellar,” naming sci-fi classics like “2001,” “Star Trek,” and “Blade Runner” and even joking that he wasn’t about to get more specific or the fans would tear him apart when the movie came out, for ripping those other movies off.

“Interstellar” also stars Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, and Mackenzie Foy. It will be out in November, with a new trailer believed to arrive online in a few weeks’ time. It was screened at Comic-Con after the chat with Nolan and McConaughey and pretty much blew people’s mind.
