Teaser screened twice in Hall H was only for the eyes of the fans at the convention

Despite talk to the contrary, the teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which screened twice in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 over the weekend, will not be released to the wider public.

Footage shown at the convention usually falls in 2 categories: official trailers that are screened with just a few days ahead of the wide release (as was the case with “The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies”) or official footage that is never meant for the eyes of other fans than those present at the convention.

The “Batman V. Superman” teaser falls in the latter category, Variety confirms. This comes straight from Sue Kroll, president worldwide marketing and international distribution at Warner Bros., who revealed, “That’s just going to live in that hall. We’ll post extended trailers and stills, but that presentation, that was just for those fans.”

This would explain why Warners was in such a rush to pull all the leaked trailers that emerged online within minutes of the first screening. As far as we can tell right now, there’s not one single copy of it available on video-sharing websites although we’re positive that, with enough time on your hands and resources, you could still find it buried somewhere.

We still have photos, though – and a very accurate description of what was shown.

The concept of the teaser was to plant the idea of conflict between two of the biggest superheroes ever. Snyder once said that he had opted for “V.” in the title instead of “vs.” because he didn’t want fans to think that these two would be battling (which was a rather lame explanation, because “V.” and “vs.” mean the same thing), but this teaser did just that.

It opened with Ben Affleck as Batman on the roof of the Gotham Police Department building. He’s not wearing the suit fans have come to know him for in the movies, but a heavily-armored one, with glowing light blue (almost white) eyes. He looks a bit like the Robocop prototype in it, with a cape.

Batman approaches the Bat Signal and removes the cover from it, pulling on the lever to flash the Bat Signal in the sky. As the camera follows the ray of light upwards in the sky, there’s Superman (Henry Cavill) floating right in the middle of the Bat Signal.

His eyes burn bright red, which could mean that he’s about to turn his deadly lasers on the Bat. Superman looks super angry, for whatever reason.

Before this Comic-Con teaser, one popular theory online about the plot if the upcoming film was that Batman would look to bring Superman to justice for destroying Metropolis in the final act of “Man of Steel.” Sure, he also saved the city, but he probably killed as many people as General Zod in his attempt to “save” it.

With this video, it became clear that it’s not Batman who has a bone to pick with Superman, but the other way around, which brings us to the question: what could have the Bat done to make Supes so angry that he’s just about to commit his second murder?

“Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” will be out in May 2016. We’ll have to wait until then for an answer to this burning question.
