Marvel brought the big guns at the Comic-Con 2013 in San Diego: fans in attendance got their first taste of the upcoming “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the sequel to the 2011 film. The first footage from the film was also shown.

Slash Film describes the trailer as something entirely new, something we’ve never seen from Marvel – or any other superhero film for that matter.

“We’ve heard that the film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, would be something like a thriller, but this footage really showed off a movie that deeply integrates current interests and fears about how we’re managing national security,” the e-zine says.

“In short, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is from a time where political morality seemed pretty black and white, and is now dealing with a modern world in which everything is drawn in shades of grey,” Slash Film adds.

In other words, whereas “The Avengers” focused mostly on action, “Captain America” will be mainly substance. Fret not though, explosive action scenes won’t lack.

“The movie looks as big as The Avengers in many ways, and the footage felt very different from the look of the first film. It really does feel like a thriller — not quite ’70s, not quite Bourne. It’s definitely a Marvel movie, but not one we’ve seen before,” the e-zine writes.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” will be out in April 2014.
