Staff at Columbus Zoo are happy to announce that, last month, the facility welcomed a total of three baby Humboldt penguins.

The tiny birds, one of which is pictured above, are all healthy and active, and keepers say that it will not be long before they make their public debut.

Zoo Borns tells us that the three penguins emerged from their eggs one after the other, and that, at the time when they were born, they weighed about as much as a seriously undersized schnitzel.

Thus, the first to hatch tipped the scale at 85 grams (almost 3 ounces). The second and the third, on the other hand, were even slimmer, and weighed 79 grams (about 2.8 ounces) and 56 grams (some 2 ounces), respectively.

The same source details that the tiny birds appear to have very distinct personalities, and are not shy about letting others know this about them. When they are finally allowed to go about exploring the great outdoors for the first time ever, they are to be fitted with colored wing bands.

Keepers explain that this will make it easier both for them and for visitors to the zoo to keep tabs on what each of the baby penguins are up to at a given time.
