If we were to live in a black-and-white environment we would become angrier, irritable and we'd develop a poor health, for sure. Even if we are not aware of the effects colors have on our spiritual and affective states, we should get wind of the therapeutic effect of colors, as they are meant to make our world brighter, stress-free and healthier.

Besides the two non-colors, black and white, there are seven main colors that can be noticed by anyone when the rainbow forms after the rain or by reflecting the sunbeams into a crystal prism. These seven main colors are: red, orange, yellow, blue, green, violet and indigo. Red, yellow and blue are primary or fundamental colors, as they cannot be obtained by the mixing of any other colors. Instead, by mixing them we can obtain the other colors: green (made of yellow and blue), orange (yellow and red) and violet (red and blue.)

It is scientifically acknowledged that colors and light bring about different emotional responses in individuals. The reactions and attitudes towards certain tones and shades of colors are caused by the "power" the color exerts on our personality: it can calm, relax or cure us, make us angry, sad etc. Also, we can guess the qualities and flaws a person has in his or her preferences towards certain colors.

Black is a formal and conventional non-color, as opposed to green, which is the color of life. Usually, it is used to symbolize death and mourning, but there are countries that use white for the death ritual, like the Chinese.

White symbolizes the Moon, therefore it is the color of femininity and purity.

Red is the color of passion and optimism, enhancing activity, maybe the most intense color. It brings about vitality, courage and self-confidence. But it can also stand for aggressive and danger. It is considered the color of Masculinity. The Egyptians had their statues that designated women in white tones and those who designated men in brown tones (considered a shade of red.)

Pink, made from red and white, is also a feminine color, inducing comfort and relaxation.

Orange stands for ambition, but lacks the warmth of red. Orange energy makes us cheerful and enhances our appetite for life. It is used therapeutically to lift the anxious states and to brighten up the dullness.

Yellow is considered to be the most positive of all the colors, resembling the pure light and brightness. It is the color that brings people together - a social color - and also the color of cleverness. Yellow energy helps us think clear and stimulates interest and curiosity. It is used in color therapy to release us from stress and depression.

Green is generally acknowledged as "the healing color." It also symbolizes life, growth and rebirth, as it is the color of fresh plants. It is the color of balance and self-control.

Even if in some cultures it is received as the closest to black and dark shades, a negative color, blue is suited for idealistic and rational individuals, bringing tranquility to the soul. It has a relaxing effect on our nervous system and is recommended in sleep disorders.

Brown and gray are both neutral colors, but brown is seen as a warm neutral color, while gray is seen as a cold neutral color.
