High officials in Colombia are very much interested in establishing a new protected area. Specifically, they wish to have the Estrella Fluvial de Inirida river area declared a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

According to Mongabay, the region in question borders Venezuela. It is home to many plant and animal species, including some 470 types of fish of which many are marketed as part of the freshwater aquarium trade.

Besides, this soon-to-be-protected area accommodates as many as 15 indigenous communities and houses a peculiar rock formation known as the Mavicure Hills, the same source details.

Once President Juan Manuel Santos grants legal protection to this region, mining companies will no longer be able to exploit it.

Since such activities are considered to be the chief threat to local biodiversity, this can only come as good news as far as conservation efforts are concerned.
