The wrestling business is a very profitable one, both for wrestlers and for promoters, who make money off of almost anything they lend their names and faces to. One of the most valuable industries wrestling partnered with is the gaming one, which launched quite a lot of titles that featured different franchises from the fighting sport.
We have seen games based on TNA Impact or other divisions, but undoubtedly the most popular wrestling-based series is THQ's SmackDown vs Raw. The franchise now boasts over 9 titles that have been launched on a variety of consoles from the PlayStation 1 to the PS3, Xbox 360 or Nintendo DS.
Although the recent iteration in the franchise, SmackDown vs Raw 2008, didn't receive too many positive reviews, THQ, the developer and publisher of the game, hopes that the next one, labeled
SmackDown vs Raw 2009, will bring back fans of the franchise with new gameplay modes, challenges and a new wrestler roster filled with the big name players from all the divisions. The game is set to be launched on November 9 in North America, with other countries getting their hands on it also around that date.
In an effort to hype up the impending launch of the title, THQ has just announced that it will be releasing a special, limited Collector's Edition of the game exclusively for the PlayStation 3. For a few extra dollars, fans will get their hands on a Blu-ray disc filled with a making-of documentary, relating the development process of the game, and over two hours of wrestling footage that went into the making of the title. In terms of packaging, the North American customers will receive the game in a special steel cage while Europeans and Asians will have their edition encased in a miniature ring.
"The WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 collector’s edition for the PlayStation 3 system is a tremendous opportunity for us to collaborate with our partners to produce a unique offering for our fans," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president, Worldwide Marketing, THQ. "In addition to the great WWE video features, the videogame documentary will allow fans to see all of the work that goes into making their favorite fighting videogame franchise."
This really is a great opportunity for fans to get their very special edition game with some pretty interesting Blu-ray content that is sure to look great on a wide-screen TV. Too bad THQ won't be bringing this special offer for the Xbox 360 though.
