During a visit to China, United Nations Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal explained that the key to addressing cyber security issues lies in cooperation.

“Cyber security is one of those challenges that can only be faced jointly and since the UN offers a platform to deal with global challenges, cyber security being such a global challenge, is also being dealt with by the UN,” the official said in an interview with China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Launsky-Tieffenthal believes that collective efforts are needed to address terrorism and piracy as well.

In the meantime, China continues to make strong statements in light of the revelations regarding the United States’ controversial PRISM program.

According to Chinese National Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun, PRISM has shown the “hypocrisy” of some countries regarding cyber security.

Yang noted that the PRISM program highlights the importance of cyber security and information security, both of which China is determined to safeguard.
