The race is officially on: with still some months to go until the premiere of season 6 of Showtime’s “Dexter,” the first details on the cast and the storyline are beginning to emerge online. On that note, Colin Hanks has just landed a part in the series.

Shortly after Showtime released the first teaser trailer for the new season (which you can also see below, embedded at the end of the article), word got out online that fans may have their baddie already.

As Michael Ausiello of TVLine confirms, Colin Hanks, son of Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks, has been cast for a recurring role. Mind though that official confirmation is still pending.

“Sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that the Good Guys star Mad Men alum is joining the cast of Dexter for a major Season 6 arc playing Travis, a highly intelligent expert on ancient artifacts who gets linked to a series of grisly murders in Miami,” Ausiello writes.

Hanks’ character will reportedly appear in all 12 episodes of the upcoming season.

This, in turn, has opened the debate on whether he’ll play a rival of Dexter’s or a friend / colleague, with several considerations tipping the scales in favor of the latter option.

“If this Travis turns out to be an adversary of Dex’s, it’s unlikely he’ll fit the mold of past baddies such as Trinity and the Ice Truck Killer, given what Showtime president David Nevins recently told TVLine about the show’s coming season,” Ausiello points out.

“It is not [about] one big bad. There’s one interesting story that will move through the season, and it will be cast very interestingly, but it’s not exactly that one person,” were Nevins’ exact words.

People connected with the show have also said in past interviews that one of the biggest themes explored in season 6 will be that of the relationship between Dexter and Deborah, and how it will possibly be affected by Deb’s finding out about Dex’s nighttime “hobby.”

As we also noted yesterday, this could also explain why, at the end of the first teaser for season 6, there’s a woman screaming “Oh my God!.” She could be Deb. Check it out.
