Colin Farrell is currently undergoing a treatment in a specialized center.
The Irish actor suffers from exhaustion and an addiction to prescription drugs, according to his publicist, Danica Smith, who also mentioned that the painkillers have been prescribed to him after a back injury.
The name of the treatment center has not been disclosed.
"We ask that the press respect the privacy of Mr. Farrell and his family", Farrell's publicist said.
"No other comments are to be made at this time," she added.
The 29-year-old Alexander star had completed filming his new movie "Miami Vice", in which he plays Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett.
Farrell, who will next be seen in "Ask the Dust", in 2006, is also attached to star in "Borgia" (2006), "Pride and Glory" (2007) and "I'm Not There: Suppositions on a Film Concerning Dylan" (2006).
The actor came to prominence on British television screens in the long-running series Ballykissangel, but came to Hollywood's attention in the Joel Schumacher film Tigerland, in 2000.
He had starring roles in action films "SWAT", "Hart's War" and "The Recruit", opposite Al Pacino, and established himself as leading man material in Alexander, but he still kept his hell-raiser image.
Farrell, who has been granted earlier this years a restraining order banning ex girlfriend, model Nicole Narain from selling a video of them having sex, returns to the big screen in ten US on Christmas Day, with the Terrence Malick drama "The New World".
