There was a time when not a day went by without Colin Farrell making the headlines for yet another one of his scandalous adventures. Obviously, those days are gone, and the handsome actor credits his two sons for the change – and for saving his life.

As fans must already know, Colin will be seen next in “Total Recall,” a remake by Len Wiseman of the film of the same name with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Farrell had to get in excellent shape for the film, which more than makes sense considering he plays a very physical role.

Even for someone who was never out of shape per se, the new routine proved quite a challenge, he says for the latest issue of Men's Health UK.

To get fit to play a dormant secret agent, Colin had to stick to a strict workout routine, which involved jogging for 2 miles (3.21 km) and doing weights for 6 days each week.

He tells Men's Health he trained like this for three months before the film went into production.

However, he was in good shape before as well, he admits. At one point, his life spiraled so out of control he had no other choice but to turn it around.

“I don’t put the same level of energy into healthy living as I did into unhealthy living. I put an enormous amount of energy into the destruction of my body and if I put the same amount into treating my body in a positive way, that too would end up being a sickness,” Colin says.

“But I eat really well, drink loads of green tea, and take a [expletive]load of vitamins,” he adds.

In the end, he is the first to be able to tell the difference.

“I’m somebody who a couple of years ago couldn’t even run a mile,” Colin says.

In the same interview, the handsome actor opens up about his darker phase in life and how he basically owes his life to his 2 sons who, from what he says, even inherited his potty mouth.

Here is the rest of the interview.
