Coldplay's latest album, "X&Y" hit the American chart topper on Wednesday, with more than 737,000 copies sold and debuted on the first place in another 21 countries. The strong debut for Coldplay's third studio release was good news for the band's label, EMI Group Plc
Last month, EMI reported lower annual profits for its fiscal year ended March 31, citing the delayed release of "X&Y" and a record from another band, Gorillaz.
"I don't really care about EMI," lead singer Chris Martin told Reuters at a recent appearance in Manhattan. "I think shareholders are the great evil of this modern world."
According to Nielsen SoundScan, "X&Y" outranked Mariah Carey's latest album from the top of the Billboard 200 chart.
