Every song that wants to be a hit needs a spectacular launching, continuous and effective promoting and also a large spreading area. And what spreading area can surpass the number of cell phones associated with a market of related services in continuous growth? The strategy of potential hits being first released as ring tones, and only after that to be aired belongs to Cingular Wireless.

The first song with this new strategy is played by the British
band Coldplay whose label is EMI Group Capitol Records. However, this record company will not be the sole supplier of songs, and other companies will also follow. The solution of promoting songs through cell phones is completely new, and until now, cell phones have only been associated with the idea of playing songs that are already hits.

The partnership between wireless service operators and record companies is announced as profitable, both parts obtaining significant benefits. In this way, artists have a new promoting method for albums which are going through a difficult period right now because of the world wide piracy.

The appearance of polyphony has started a continuously developing market, the offer of ring tones or wall papers for cell phones representing an important percentage from the total value of non-voice services associated to cell phones. Polyphony was followed by MP3 files used as ring tones, and the next step is the association of video ring tones with video clips or short clips made by the phone's users.

Coming back to Coldplay, the band declared that is delighted with the promoting style chosen by the record company. The song which will be transformed into a ring tone is "Speed of Sound," available on the web site of Cingular. Radio and TV airplay will start on April 18, and the album will be released in June.
