After carving for himself a place in television history with “Dexter” (yes, the pun is intended), Michael C. Hall continues to deliver spectacularly in film as well. In his latest big screen release, he becomes a killer once more but, this time, he’s an accidental one.

The film is called “Cold in July” and it screened at the Sundance Film Festival this year where it was welcomed with very glowing reviews, judging by the pull quotes inserted in the first official trailer, which is embedded below.

Michael C. Hall plays a husband and a father who, one dreadful night, wakes up to the phrase no one would ever want to hear: I think there’s somebody in the house. He checks for his gun and goes out to find the intruder, whom he eventually shoots.

This killing, though in self-defense, will turn his entire life upside down, but not for the reasons you’d expect. Sure, he is traumatized and is having a hard time dealing with the idea that he’s taken a human life, but that’s not even the worst of it.

“Cold in July” is directed by Jim Mickle (“We Are What We Are”) and also stars Sam Shepard and Don Johnson. It will be out in theaters and on Video On Demand on May 23.
