Even if nowadays researchers strive to prove that drinking coffee has negative effects on our health by causing a long list of diseases, among which heart conditions, birth problems, pancreatic cancer, we should not leave behind the health benefits we get from it.

It has been scientifically demonstrated that drinking a moderate amount - 1 or 2 cups - of coffee per day brings benefits for severe illnesses such as (lowering the risk of) colon cancer, gallstones, cirrhosis of the liver, Parkinson's disease, (reduction in onset of) asthma.

A study developed at the Harvard School of Public Health and presented at the American Diabetes Association, the 63rd Scientific Sessions, showed that regular drinking of coffee is very helpful in keeping away the risk of getting diabetes.

The short-term effects of coffee upon our body are also extremely beneficial, as it helps us think faster and clearer, banishing drowsiness and fatigue. In the 1970 edition of The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, Dr. J. Murdoch Ritchie states that after "taking caffeine one is capable of a greater sustained intellectual effort and a more perfect association of ideas. (...) typists, for example, work faster and with fewer errors."

By improving an individual's performance, vigor, alertness and efficiency the caffeine in coffee leads to a decline in levels of depression and anxiety, as well as risk of committing suicide.

Along with fruits and vegetables, coffee contains significant amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances capable of counteracting the damaging effects of oxidation in body's tissues, aiding our organism to protect against cell damage and even reduce risks of certain types of cancer. They consist in nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and enzymes (proteins that assist in chemical reactions.)

Besides drinking coffee, we can use it externally against bad smells left by garlic, onion, or fish on your hands by gently rubbing them with coffee grounds and then remove it with warm water.

Keep your hair and skin healthy and shiny by using natural coffee masks. For your hair, make a strong black coffee and, when it is cold, apply the liquid on the dry hair and leave it there for about 20 minutes. Afterwards rinse the hair with plenty of water and you will notice the fresh look you have got.

For the skin, coffee is used in order to clean, purify, minimize the pores and remove the dead cells. The mask is prepared from a cup of coffee grounds mixed with the white of an egg and should be applied by massage on the face. When the coffee gets dry, remove it with warm water and use a moisturizing face lotion afterwards, especially those who already have a dry complexion.

The power caffeine has against cellulite is world wide acknowledged, taking into account the fact that most of the anti-cellulite body lotions use it as a main ingredient. As a home-made natural product, a paste made of warm coffee leas and olive oil can be as effective as the commercial creams. Prepare this mixture and then rub it on the areas of your body that are affected by cellulite, then rinse off the remainders.
