Despite its increasingly strong focus on the Cloud, Microsoft continues to push forward its server business, with a new Windows Server platform in the works, on top of what the company shared with the public.

It’s the case with Windows Server Codenamed Breckenridge, which is currently under development, according to Mary-Jo Foley.

The Redmond company has so far failed to mention codenamed Breckenridge officially, and fact is that the little information that is available doesn’t come from the software giant.

The mention was found in a privacy statement on the Microsoft Connect download site, and additional info on Windows Server Codenamed Breckenridge is extremely scarce.

It appears that this Windows Server operating system is related to the next major iteration of Windows Home Server.

Microsoft is currently cooking Windows Home Server Codenamed Vail, or the second major version of its home sever.

However, Codenamed Breckenridge is not exactly that close to Vail. Instead it’s being built to function more like a storage server, than to offer the diversified capabilities of a Windows Home Server release.

And in this sense, the consumers segment targeted will be completely different, namely business customers rather than home users.

Of course, with no actual details available from Microsoft, this all needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

A number of Windows Server platforms are cooking over in Redmond at this point in time. First off, there’s Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 which is due in the first half of 2011, I’m hearing something like March.

Then there’s Codenamed Vail, the next iteration of Windows Home Server, as well as Windows SBS Codenamed Aurora.

And of course, we shouldn’t forget Windows Server 8, the successor of Windows Server 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2, how it ended up being branded officially.
